Line: In In this session, 3.2. Line X Movement, please focus on curved lines, and use more than 2 curved lines.

Learn what kind of curved lines can be poetic. You may use any kind of curved lines in ikebana, but you need to realise that only a certain kind of line is the right line for your specific design. You will need to think carefully and meditate to determine the best line for your work.

Movement: In Movement 1 we encouraged you to incorporate an S shaped line in your arrangement, and in Movement 2 you became familiar with how to mange several S shaped lines following a diagram to make basic styles.

Check the session notes* to review the strategies on how to compose curves lines (*session notes are available only for our participants, and they will be published sometime).

In 3.2. Line X Movement your task is to start with composing a design using a few curved lines. Don’t follow basic styles or sample works. Try to push your boundaries.

Observe your composition of curved lines. Pay attention to the space that you created. You should consider all ikebana principles to refine your design and deepen your meditation. Focus on your work so that you become selfless and forget all about designs.

Our video analyses a couple of sample works. We hope that would be a guidance for your creative meditation.

Objectives in Line x Movement

  1. Find/create curved lines in natural materials.
  2. Compose a design framework using curved lines.
  3. Learn how to make each curved line effective and poetic.
  4. Think about creating an effective relationship between movement and space.
  5. See the video for some samples and learn some strategies including how to apply the Fibonacci numbers.
  6. Check your work in terms of other design principles, for example,  balance, contrast and pattern. You may not be able to apply all the principles, but trying to incorporate some of them may help improve your work.
  7. Meditate on your work with a selfless mind, without thinking too much about the design. Make adjustments.

How to Make It?

You will receive our video (full version) which will help you analyse sample works, and help you make your ikebana work.
